by Manoj Jasra Search Engine Strategies is less then a month away and this year it's taking place at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. Earlier this week I had the opportunity to catch up with Andrew Chang, Marketing Manager at LinkedIn, to get some insight into his session on PPC and SEO best practices--specific to B2B. Read our conversation below: [Manoj]: Your session at SES is related to SEO/PPC strategies with regards to B2B , how does LinkedIn become part of equation? [Andrew Chang]: Millions of people visit LinkedIn each day to connect and re-connect with colleagues and business associates. Our members come from all walks of life - accountants, financial advisors, attorneys, web developers - and they are well-connected and active professionals that many B2B marketers are trying to reach. For this reason, we built and launched our own self-service PPC advertising offering called LinkedIn DirectAds ( http://www.linkedin.com/directads ) that allows anyone with a LinkedIn account to place text ads on prominent pages and target those ads to only people you're trying to reach. A quick example of how this works: One of our most successful customers is an e-learning company that's trying to attract the attention of primary school teachers to sign up for a Master's degree program in Education. Over 214,000 LinkedIn members have identified themselves (in their LinkedIn profiles) as being in the "Primary/Secondary Education" industry. Within a few minutes, the e-learning company created a text ad and start displaying the ad only to those 214,000 members when they visited LinkedIn.

by Jennifer Laycock With more and more people signing on to social sites like Twitter and Facebook, companies are working overtime to figure out how to make the companies, products and offerings go viral. While I've written quite a few article about the theories behind preparing a campaign that's likely to go viral, the truth is that some of the most effective viral campaigns are also the simplest. Sometimes it's less about creating a great idea and more about enabling the spread. I saw the perfect example of this earlier today while hunting for a pair of sandals. I was looking for a pair of slip-on Croc sandals to replace a pair that broke last week. Since I'm going camping with friends this weekend, I wanted to make sure I had replacements before we head out on Thursday. There aren't any local stores here in Canton that sell this style of Crocs, so I headed to Zappos, knowing I'd get fast, free shipping. Unfortunately, Zappos doesn't carry Crocs.

by David Carberry A few weeks ago I attended the Maryland Chamber of Commerce session on Social Media and Online Marketing with guest host Mario Armstrong from XM radio. The panel consisted of Greg Cangialosi, CEO of Blue Sky Factory , Matt Goddard, CEO of r2integrated and Leah Messina, CEO of Sinuate Media . The panelists spoke about various topics such as; online tools, social marketing and challenges their clients face. Some good points were made throughout the session however, as most panels go, they were all intertwined and scattered. I have highlighted some of the main items that are beneficial to all businesses either as a refresher or as new information. Communities How are your customers currently buying items or services? Social media outlets such as Twitter don't work for everyone or every business.

The E-Justice blog has published an interesting post on 25 Surprising Things That Google Knows About You . Below is a sample from the complete list of 25. The web pages you visit : Google AdSense is used by many web pages for online advertising, and Google's cookies record your visits to web pages with their ad program on them. The blogs you read : If you use Google Reader, Google knows the blogs you subscribe to. Even if you're not on Google Reader, Google knows all of the Blogger pages you visit.

by Manoj Jasra I love the new blog widget by SocialTwist called Tell-A-Friend . It's a pretty slick way for my readers to share content via email, instant messenger, social networks and bookmarks. SocialTwist supports numerous platforms, so the implementation was pretty simple - it even worked for Classic Blogger (which is what I use on my personal blog). The Tell-a-Friend service works in most blogging platforms and popular Content Management Systems (CMS). Currently supported platforms are: Wordpress engine, Wordpress.com (free accounts as well), Blogger/Blogspot, TextPattern, JRoller, TypePad, Movable Type, Drupal, Joomla, Pligg, Mambo, and OSCommerce.

by Diane Aull A few days ago, I found lurking in my inbox an email bearing the ominous news that the Google sitemap file for one of the sites I manage was "missing." Oh, dear! The email then helpfully offered a company's services to generate a sitemap for me, even directing me to a page on the company's site that would explain just what this allegedly incredibly complex code is and why I supposedly need one. Being a curious sort, I visited the site. Clearly I must be in the wrong business. These folks charge hundreds of dollars to generate a sitemap for you. They charge separately for creating a "Google sitemap" and a "Yahoo sitemap" (nearly $400 if you want both). And they want five to 10 business days to get the file(s) back to you! All this, when sitemaps.org spells out the XML file schema for a sitemap so you can create one yourself -- for free.
