Keep Your Comments Organized With BackType!

by Mack Collier I’ve said it time and time again, but the best way to grow your blog, is to leave it.  And that means leaving a LOT of comments on other blogs!  But if you do this, it can be difficult to keep track of all the blog posts that you have commented on.  Difficult that is, until BackType came along. I first heard about BackType when CK gave her workshop on Online Branding at the last Small Business Marketing Unleashed in Columbus (See?  This is another reason why SBMU is so valuable!).  What BackType does is give you a way to keep up with all the comments you leave on other blogs, and it also lets you ‘follow’ other people so you can keep up with the comments they leave! Pretty cool, eh?  One big problem that I ran into when I first started using BackType was when I went ‘Claim’ my comments.  You need to tell BackType which URL you type in when you leave comments (like the URL for your blog).  I was doing this wrong, I was typing in the URLs for blogs that I commented on!  So it was as if I was claiming comments that other people left!  Whoops!  I finally figured out where my error was because two of Backtype’s founders, Christopher Golda and Mike Montano did a great job of walking me through how to use the service on Twitter!  And my friend Gennefer Snowfield did a wonderful job of evangelizing the service, and pointing me toward Christopher and Mike! So there’s a couple of lessons here.  The first is, if you can’t see the ‘value’ in using a particular site, talk to a ‘power’ user and see how they use it.  I have been on BackType for months, but only recently found the value when Gennefer helped get me in touch with Christopher and Mike, who helped walk me through my issues. And the second lesson?  Twitter is the new customer service channel, especially for web-centric businesses! BTW if you are on BackType, you can follow me here .
